Lotte Huisman, MSc Limnology and Oceanography (2011). Current Position: PhD student Computational Science

For my master Limnology and Oceanography (UvA) I did two research internships at the Computational Science research group. Both internships were part of the project Multiscale Modelling of Calcification in Scleractinian Corals, supervised by dr. Jaap Kaandorp and dr. Carolina Cronemberger. For the first internship I worked on constructing a spatiotemporal model of calcification physiology. Through the contacts of my supervisor Jaap Kaandorp I was able to visit the Coral Genomics group of prof. dr. David Miller in Townsville Australia for my second internship. Here I worked on high-throughput expression profiling of genes involved in calcification using next generation sequencing technology. The multidisciplinary nature of SCS allowed me to combine a computational perspective with a cutting edge experimental approach to the subject of calcification, something that resulted in many interesting scientific insights as well as a great personal learning experience. I am very happy that the group enabled me to continue my research by offering me the chance to do a PhD project. In this project I will continue with my work on calcification and combine this with genome-wide reconstruction and modeling of cellular networks in corals and their relatives.”
